Understanding the Chats Feature
Communicate with families through direct messages and broadcasts in Class Manager
Chats allows schools and families to communicate directly within Class Manager.
There are three types of chats:
- Chat – a conversation with an individual family
- Broadcast – a private message sent to multiple families at once
- Group Chat – a shared conversation where multiple families can see and reply to messages within the same chat
📝 Currently, only Owners and Office Managers can access Chats.

How Families Receive Chats
When a family receives a new message:
- A Chat section will appear in their Family Portal
- A notification indicator will show that a new message has been received
- They can open the chat and reply directly
Unread messages will be clearly indicated so families can easily identify new conversations.
Families Without a Portal Account
If a family receives a chat but has not yet registered for the Family Portal, they will receive an email inviting them to create an account.
Once registered, they will be able to view and respond to messages.
Additional Conversation Features
Conversations also includes several tools to help you manage and organise your messages:
- Emoji reactions – React to messages with emojis.
- Image attachments – Send and receive images in your conversations.
- Schedule messages – Write a message now and choose when it should be sent.
- Pin conversations – Pin important chats so they stay at the top of your conversation list.
- Delete conversations – Remove conversations that are no longer needed.
- AI-replies & Actions – Use AI-generated replies and actions for fast responses.
Notifications
By default, chat notifications are sent as push notifications.
Notification timing and other notification preferences can't currently be managed within Class Manager.
If you want to control when or how you receive these notifications, you can adjust the notification settings for Class Manager in your device's phone settings.
Chats provides a simple way to communicate with families directly within Class Manager, helping keep conversations organised and connected to your organisation.
